Portugal vs Croatia at BMO Field was not only a football match for me — it was my first time experiencing a soccer stadium as a living architectural space.
I went there as a football fan, of course. But very quickly, the match became something else. From the upper stand, I found myself looking beyond the pitch: the roof structure, the rhythm of the seating bowl, the density of the crowd, the movement of shadow, the lake behind the stadium, the CN Tower in the distance, and the way the whole venue seemed to hold thousands of emotions inside one open frame.
For an architectural photographer, a stadium is never just a container for sport. It is a piece of infrastructure designed for pressure — visual pressure, acoustic pressure, emotional pressure, and human movement. During a FIFA World Cup match, that pressure becomes visible.

BMO Field, in this moment, was not only hosting Portugal and Croatia. It was performing.
The first impression from the upper level was the openness of the stadium. Unlike fully enclosed arenas, BMO Field allows the city and landscape to remain present. Lake Ontario appears beyond the stands. The wind turbine stands in the background. The Toronto skyline rises behind the crowd. The structure does not completely separate the event from the city; it frames the city as part of the experience.
That relationship between sport and urban context was one of the most powerful parts of the match for me. The game was happening on the field, but the atmosphere extended far beyond it. The stadium, the crowd, the skyline, the lake, and the evening sky became one composition.

This is where architectural photography becomes different from simply documenting a building. The subject is not only form. It is how form behaves when people occupy it.
The roof structure at BMO Field was especially interesting from my seat. The exposed white trusses, the underside of the canopy, the lighting rigs, the hanging technical systems, and the open corners of the stadium created a very direct architectural language. Nothing felt hidden. The building showed its mechanics.
In many of the phone shots I took, the structure became a graphic frame over the crowd. The steel members were not just engineering elements; they controlled the visual rhythm of the image. They divided the sky, compressed the stands, and gave scale to the thousands of people below.

For architects and structural designers, this is one of the most fascinating parts of stadium architecture: the structure must be massive enough to hold and protect, but visually light enough to not dominate the event. In a stadium, architecture has to support spectacle without killing it.
At BMO Field, that balance was very clear. The roof, trusses, and open air all worked together to create a stadium that still felt connected to the outside world.

The crowd was the second architecture
From above, the supporters became a moving surface of colour. Red dominated the stands, interrupted by Croatia’s checkered pattern, Portugal shirts, flags, security vests, FIFA branding, and the green geometry of the field. It was not random. It had rhythm.
This is something architects understand well: large public spaces are activated by repetition and variation. A stadium seat may be a small object, but multiplied by tens of thousands, it becomes a field of human scale. A jersey, a flag, or a banner becomes part of the visual system of the building.

During Portugal vs Croatia, the crowd turned the stadium into a temporary national landscape. The architecture provided the frame, but the supporters completed the image.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 branding added another layer. The gold FIFA letters above the stand, the red ribbon boards, the ceremony graphics, and the field presentation transformed the stadium into a global stage. These interventions were temporary, but visually powerful. They showed how major events can re-skin architecture without changing its bones.
That is a valuable thing to observe photographically. A stadium during a normal league match and the same stadium during a World Cup match are not visually the same building. The structure remains, but the identity changes.

Light was probably the most architectural element of the whole experience.
As the match moved through the evening, the sun created strong contrast across the stands. Some sections were washed in warm light, while others fell into heavy shadow under the roof. The crowd became layered: bright red, deep shade, reflected highlights, and sudden patches of gold.
This kind of light is difficult to plan for as a spectator, but it is exactly what I look for as an architectural photographer. Light reveals how a structure works. It shows depth, overhang, volume, and orientation. In some images, the shadow from the roof became almost as important as the roof itself.
The field was bright and controlled. The stands were more complex. That contrast created a strong visual tension between the precision of the game and the emotional density of the crowd.
There was also a beautiful contradiction in the view. On one side, the match was intense, loud, and full of movement. On the other side, Lake Ontario was calm. The sunset was soft. The skyline was still. The wind turbine turned slowly in the distance.
That contrast made the stadium feel even more powerful. It was not isolated from its environment. It was inserted into it.

From a photography perspective, the upper stand gave me something I would not have had from a lower seat. I could see the full spatial relationship: pitch, seating bowl, roof, crowd, city, lake, and sky. It was less about being close to the players and more about understanding the event as a complete architectural scene.
This is often true in architectural photography. The best view is not always the closest view. Sometimes distance gives clarity. From above, I could see the stadium as a system.
The phone was enough for this kind of observation. These images were not made as a commercial assignment. They were quick, instinctive, handheld photographs from my seat. But they still carry the way I see spaces professionally: through structure, proportion, light, human use, and atmosphere.

That is why this match stayed with me beyond the result.
Portugal vs Croatia was a football experience, but for me it was also a study of public architecture. It showed how a stadium becomes alive when design, engineering, branding, crowd behaviour, and natural light all meet in one place.
A stadium is one of the few architectural types where emotion is not a side effect. It is part of the program.
People arrive with expectation. They move through gates, stairs, concourses, and seating sections. They search for their view. They react together. They stand, shout, wait, celebrate, and leave with a memory shaped partly by the architecture around them.
That is what I found most interesting at BMO Field. The building did not simply host the match. It shaped how the match was seen, felt, and remembered.

For me, this first stadium experience was a reminder that architecture is not silent. In a World Cup atmosphere, it becomes loud — not by speaking, but by holding the crowd, framing the city, catching the light, and giving scale to collective emotion.
And from the upper stands of BMO Field, watching Portugal vs Croatia under the Toronto sky, that architecture was impossible to ignore.
